After reading every post I could find on Force 125 Trim Units I decided I had the guts to try to replace the pilot valve seals in the pump valve body. I thought I had executed the repairs prefectly. However, after tilting the motor up and down several times the motor suddenly stopped tilting down. Anyone recognize this problem?

My tilt unit is the one with the snap rings. When changing the pilot valve seals I also unscrewed the five bolts on the top of the pump (two normal looking bolts and three hex bolts). I carefully pulled off the cap and underneath were two springs and for bearings. I am fairly sure that I put everything back where it is supposed to go but would like to varify the location of the smaller spring. Moving counterclockwise from the largest bearing and spring you will arrive at the first small bearing. Is this the one the small spring goes upon?

Thanks for any help.

Re: 87 Force 125 Trim Pump Rebuilt and having problems

New development. I poped off the snap ring and pulled the plug out. The end cap had come off of the plug. I put it back together and reinstalled it, trimmed the motor up and again wont go down (it is still leaking down and trim cyl o-ring has been replaced). Pulled snap ring again and pulled plug out and again end cap had blown off. I used my vise to squeeze the thing together this time but have not yet reinstalled it. However I think the problem with the motor not trimming down has something to do with the location of the springs under the cap on top of the pump housing. Can anyone help with this?

I fixed my pump finally.

The location of one bearing in particular is very important to makeing the motor trim down after you rebuilt the valve body. (if you only change the seals in the check valves in the bottom of the valve assembly you are ok) If you take apart the top of the valve body you'll need this info.

The bearing that controlls the flow of fluid to tilt the motor down does not rest in the valve body (where you will find it after taking off the gear cover). In order to reinstall all the bearings and springs correctly you have to put it together upside down.

First turn the gear cover upside down and drop all springs in their appropriate places. Then drop all BB's in appropiate places. The large BB should be resting on the large spring and a small BB should be resting on the small spring.

Lower the valve body on to the gear cover and squeeze tight and at the same time screw in one of the bolts to hold it together. Once you get one bolt in you can flip it right side up and install the rest of the bolts. (3 Hex & 2 Regular bolts)

I drew some diagrams for this;

Looking at valve body:
http://www.cox-internet.com/072070/Gear-bearing-springassembly.JPG

Looking at gear cover:
http://www.cox-internet.com/072070/Cover-placementofbearings.JPG

I hope this helps someone. Thanks to all other trim/tilt posters. (I read them all)
