My lower unit has a stainless steel drive pin at the prop. I was told it should be brass so it can sheer if necessary. Parts book shows a pt# K247, but does not indicate either brass or steel. Does anyone have an opinion?

Yeah! That pin is a THRUST pin, not a drive shear pin. The prop shaft is splined to drive the prop and the pin takes the thrust load and locates the prop. The prop has a rubber hub that slips (MAYBE) if you hit something hard enough to damage the shaft or gears.

No matter if you use a brass or stainless pin, it will not shear on a hard hit.

Use the stainless pin.
