Yesterday as I approached a bridge and tried to slow down, I couldn't (17 foot Carolina Skiff). I could not get the engine into neutral. Felt like a stuck shift cable. I had to do circles, finally forced it - reved real high. I immediately turned the ignition switch off and trolled it back to the dock. Two weeks ago ran perfect. {Once before I could not shift at the when putting it in the water - took it in to mechanic, they greased it up, worked fine.) When I got it home, took the engine cover off. Still grease in the right places. I tried the shifter control - everything appeared to be working. It went into forward, back to neutral, to reverse. I tried it over and over, no problem. Ran the motor and tried the shifter again, everything worked perfect. I greased it up again. Don't see anything wrong. I will say that at the boat ramp when I reverse it off the trailer, then shift to forward it often squeals. It has been doing that for a while, but never does it when testing on the trailer. Any ideas?

Intermittent faults are very hard to locate. Check your gear oil for metal shavings in case somethings gone wrong in there and also check the cable for any small sign of a kink, in case the cables bent/failed internally

I had the lower end rebuilt a few years ago. Don’t know if that would have anything do with. Maybe shift rod adjustment issues?

I read somewhere that there is something that keeps you from going into neutral if you rpm is too high. I forced it and the motor reved high. Shut it off immediately.

I guess I’ll check the lower end oil and maybe replace the cables. Any other ideas?

Well ---Post a picture of your control box.-----------The factory control box would put the motor at slow idle BEFORE shifting to neutral.
