I've been lurking on this board for some time now, but had never actually had to post until now. I just changed my water pump last weekend, which went pretty well. I may have cursed out the impeller key a few times, but it all worked out. My issue is that I found an extra o-ring when I was cleaning off my workbench which I foolishly overlooked on the install. From looking at the parts diagram, there are only two. One inside the housing beneath the metal insert which I installed. The other appears to go on the driveshaft, above the grommet. I did install the grommet, but missed the little o-ring. It is part#73 from the below diagram.

Do I really need need to pull the whole thing apart for this? I may be wrong, but from my understanding of how it works, it doesn't seem that this will be a huge problem. Please help me out. Thanks.

Re: 87 Johnson Water Pump Question

When the top of the driveshaft is inserted into the crank, it should be lubricated with moly lube, and sealed with an o-ring, # 73 on the gearcase diagram.

The driveshaft splines are subjected to great stress, heat and friction. The o-ring prevents water from reaching the splines and the lubricant helps to prevent rusting.

Re: 87 Johnson Water Pump Question

Thanks, guess I'm pulling that bad boy out again this weekend. I used a little marine grease on the lower unit bolts last time as someone on this board suggested. Should I use something else? I understnd that the grease prevent corrosion, but should I be worried about the bolts loosening?
