i bought this boat/motor new, never had problem til other day--only use it once, twice a year for last few years. took it out, it cranked relatively quick, ran about 100 yards fine, then alarm came on. shut it off. not pumping water. trolled in emotor. took it to local merc/skeeter dealer to replace water pump.they did. then said it was also not firing all cylinders, only one.needed "trigger" $150. replaced "trigger".Said still not firing all cylinders, now firing 2+3 but not #1. Needed "power pack"(or "switchbox assembly").$250.I held them up on this til i find out more from somebody out there in cyber land! My total bill will be apprx $730 if they do this!(and all for a water impeller!) They also said they changed the lower unit lub-was milky with water. I had just changed it the day before. The fluid I drained was fine, and the new fluid was only in water for 10 minutes, and 100 yards. I did not put new gaskets on the plugs, they said that is where it leaked. (?) Any thoughts?

nomechanic,

The water pump and and your running problems are not related. What they are proposing to do, sounds right to me. The trigger probably tested bad and they should have been able to tell you that the powerpack ws bad at the same time. They just missed it on the first go around.

Yes, ten minutes with leaking fill/drain plug seals will let enough water in the L/U to turn the oil milky. Buy some fill/drain plug seals, they're dirt cheap.

I don't think they are trying to rip you off.

To: djohns--just wanted to say thanks for your info. I went and watched the marina repair my motor. They wound up putting on a new trigger and power pack. Cost total of 650. with impeller and all else. Thanks.
