it's a 87 5.7 omc, takes quite a while for the voltmeter to come up to operating voltage, yesterday we went on a 15 minute trip and never charged at all. is there a way to put a never type alternator on?

Could be your guage.Should'nt be to hard to pull your alternator and take it your local auto parts store to be tested. If it is your alternator that is the problem YOU MUST replace it with a marine alternator, or have it rebuilt.

If the alternator is charging at all, I would look into the battery as being bad. Most times, an alternator will work or it won't work. No slow charging as you describe....

I bet it not the alternator or battery but the gage is sticking. Next time before you start up hook up digital volt meter to the battery.
Check and record voltage before you start up, should be 12.6 volts.

Start your engine and check voltage again should be 13.8 volts or higher. If it is alternator and Battery not the problem.

Check you boat volt meter and see if it matches you digital voltmeter. If not tap the gage, and check for loose wires.

If your voltage is not 13.8 on the digital volt meter, shut down and check belt tension.
