Was out about 45 miles from ST AUGISTINE Saturday when something Wierd happend.

Engine was running fine all day, until I went to retrive my marker bouy. I overshot and put her in reverse for a second, Took her out of Gear and retrieved the Bouy, went to put her back in Gear and the shifter was real hard to push, so I put her back in Reverse then out of gear and to Forward and she went, a little resistance but ok.

Well got going on plane, and backed down to 4500 due to conditions of the sea (bumpy) anyway about 4 miles later the engine starts to bog down like I have a shaft break or Im towing 2 tons of bricks behind me. Well, I stop, lift the engine to see if I picked up anything, and there is nothing there. I put it back in gear and get up to 3400 but she is still laboring to get up (WO is normally 5900) So I put her to wide Open and she gets around 4200 or so. but with every Swell she has to spool back up (few seconds) then she opens up again like she is ok, then hit another swell and she boggs down again. this goes on for a while I knew I was burning gas at a very high rate due to the drag on the engine. Well I end up running out of gas 13.5 miles short land. Sea tow brings me more gas 2.5 hours later, while waiting I keep on cycling the shifter until it losenes up to normal resistance. I get gas put her in gear and she takes off a little less then normal but not bad I put her to W/0 and Im still 800 off my normal operation, I get to the ramp get her on the trailor and she runs out again.

(normal fuel burn is approx 1.9 to 2.1 mph but I burned 10 gallons in 14 miles) I belive the exsive burn was due to a fouled plug caused by the over-load on the engine the previouse 35 miles, but Im wondering what could of bogged the engine down that bad? Im thinking its something to do with my Gear Case/Linkage out of adjusment..anyone else every have something like this happen??

Jake.... It sounds like you've developed lower unit trouble. Remove the lower drain screw. I would suspect that you're going to find a great amount of metal filings there.

Pull the prop first and see if anything is wound up on the shaft.

c/6

Hooty

I plan on pulling the prop prior to dropping and readjusting the shift rod (30 lb Mirage prop makes it to heavy)

Re: 87 Rude 225 Bogg Down Problem....

Well, found out what the problem was.

I didnt have my trim tab on when running last time, there is a small water port that cools the prop-shaft bearings. I works best for when you are trolling (ie what I was doing) if you dont have it hooked up you will heat the bearing creating a Shaft Break system on your LU.

I was only in 55 degree water at the time and that is what saved me or should I say my lower unit. It was the last bearing that bogged me down. 22 bucks later Im good to go, no scoring or anything on the shaft itself, even the race was in perfect shape...never run without the tab!!!! :)
