I took my boat out for the first time and everything went great.
Got it back to my house and tried to raise/lower the outdrive and all I got was clicking.

I cleaned the wires that are plugged into the solenoids, but that didnt help.

I went down to my local Napa autoparts thinking I would order a couple, that is until he told me they were 300.00 each!!

Is that a correct price? I did some searches and thought they would be around 30 each.

They are the two solenoids that activate the up and down movement of the outdrive.

Re: 87 Searay tilt trim problem...

There now that wasnt so hard. Apply power to the motor and see if it runs. If not check ground, and VERIFY it's a good ground. Then make sure the solenoids are grounded good too. Then see it it works. If not you get to follow the power. On the solenoids there are two big posts and two small ones. One of the big ones is live at all times. One of the small ones goes live when you hit the trim button. The other small terminal is for ground. When the little one goes live BOTH big terminals should be live and the motor should run. If they are live and the motor terminal is live, then you either have a ground problem at the motor or a bad motor or a stuck hydraulic pump. This is the same for both solenoids.
Give it a try, it isnt difficult. Remove the solenoids and take them to NAPA and they can match them up for you. If the motor is bad you may be able to have it repaired at an automotive starter and alternator repair joint. If the Hydraulic unit is bad, then it's gonna caost about 500 for a new one.

I wiggled the wires that go into the motor and it started working.

Back to my original question..
I went to Napa yesterday and they wanted 300 dollars each for the solenoids. Is that wrong in there computer?
Shouldnt they be around 30 bucks?

Now, is it that hard to answer my ORIGINAL question??

Hello, I can't honestly say how much each they cost. $300.00 each sounds kinda steep to me. I know this though, know you need them before you buy them. A little time and troubleshooting costs you yourself nothing. You have nothing to loose and everything to learn. However running out to buy parts when you don't really know what is wrong is EXPENSIVE and FRUSTRATING! Listen to Walt and the other guys here. The advice they have to give is PRICELESS! Many of them are experts. They fix this kind of stuff everyday. Besides, many electrical parts are non returnable. If you find you don't need them, your stuck with them! Take your time and look the system over. If you are patient, you WILL and CAN fix it! Good luck!

No, they don't cost 300 bucks unless you went into the store with the attitude you display here.

Hi
Have you checked your trim limit switch?
If not try to disconnect it and put the wires together without going thru the switch.
Regards
Affa

dude, go screw yourself....hows that for attitude

You started it by this comment "There now that wasnt so hard. "

Just becaues I didnt understand his question you didnt have to say that.

The question I had asked was how much do these solenoids cost, not please help me fix my problem.

Now to Bondo..
Instead of quoting part of my post and asking a stupid question like "What Are They?????", maybe you should read the whole post over again and you will see that "They" are solenoids....again, my question to begin with.

Hey, Not Your Fault, Walt....
I can See Why NAPA wanted $300. for solenoids....
It Took 7 Posts to find out it's a Merc....
I Guess I'll have to go find a Crystal Ball, Just so I can Hear what He's Thinking, instead of what he's NOT Typing.....

Here We are Offering a FREE Service,
And this guy comes Off at Us......

IF he was a Paying Customer, I MIGHT take a little $hit.....
But, Not Here.... :D

On between killing each other it might be good to remind him that the *exact* symptoms he describes also could be very likely caused by a dead/weak battey. :D

That's the *first* place to start particularly since he's new to the boat and the condition of the battery and alternator is totally unknown.

Put the battery on a charger to full then try the trim. OK?

-W
