Hi Guys,I have a problem that started last year and is still with me.It is a 45 hp 4 cyl.Starts good and idles good, trolls nice but bogs down when trying to gas it.I only seem to get about half throttle out of it even though it is wide open!If I am in the boat alone and am able to get it slowly up to plane it seems to run a little better although it is still not very fast as it should. When I have another person with it just bogs around like 1/4 throttle or so.Last fall I had intermittent spark on #2 cyl.I took it in and they replaced power pack. I was only able to try it once before freeze up and it seemed to run a little better with just me in it,but did not get to try it long enough I think. With WOT I squeeze the bulb but it has no effect. Is it fuel starved?I am going to try a new hose, (Larger ID ) and leave the cap off the tank tomorrow and see if that helps. It also has a new fuel pump. (Last Fall)Once and awhile when I am alone and do get it up on plane I hear a short flutter but brief.I still think it is fuel related though!I'd appreciate any help! Thanks

Hi, Shortpockets.

Sounds like you are only using 3 cylinders.

Go to www.outboardrepairs.com and look up power loss. Lots of good troubleshooting advice there.

Good luck. :)

Re: 87'merc 45 hp fuel problem?

Thanks JB! I tried it out today with a new larger hose and fittings and it took off pretty good although I did have to take off the cap on the tank when I first started out and it responded right away. But now I have another question.I did a search like you mentioned on power loss and came across a post on syncronizing spark timing and wot on a mechanical linkage. When I give it wot and look up under the flywheel the timer base stops moving before I reach wot-it is stopped by the rubber capped screw on the linkage.Should I back this screw out until the timer base moves as much as the throttle does? Will this throw off the timing or is this just an adjustment to allow the timing base further movement and then the timing is set?( I know nothing about timing an outboard)Right now it stops about 1/2 the length of wot travel. Once again thanks for the help!!
