The engine starts and idles fine. As soon as I try to go into foreward or reverse it dies. Had outdrive off (alpha I) and shaft from engine turns prop when done by hand. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks, Bill

Need to provide much more info.....
Total description of the engine. What year? Have you had any work done recently?
W/O that sort of info it's hard to even guess what is causing the problem.
My immediate reaction is that you have a wire shorting out somewhere but that's nothing more than a wild guess.

It's an 88, 3.0 Mercruiser on 17 Wellcraft. I'm trying this with muffs on trailer. Pulled outdrive to see if it was frozen, not.

The Lower Shift Cable is Stuck, or Binding.........
It's the 1 from the top/side of the engine to the outdrive......

If it was Greased,+ Reinstalled.........
It Should have been REPLACED..............

Sorry......
The lower Shift Cable is a Throw-Away Item....... Not Rebuildable........

find the shift interupter switch and watch it as you shift. as i understand its operation, it is supposed to only move when you shift out of gear, unless, the cable is dragging. there are several posts and a faq on how to adjust/replace this lower cable.
