i cant shift my gears in either direction on my '88 5.7l omc cobra. what should i start with? could it be the esa module and how do i check it for proper functioning? whatever free movement that i have seems to be transfered from controls to the engine- with the bilge cover open i can see the movement, so i think the cable is ok. also it is a dual station set up and both stations do not shift. please help with any sugestions you might have, thank you in advance

Im not too sure but I dont think it could be the ESA module.

The ESA module on mine is just a little thing that has a metal pin on it that moves in and out when you switch gears and when it moves in it slows the engine down.

You should check the shift cables and the shift cable linkages that connect by the engine. If you are looking at the engine (facing the back of the boat) the shift connections and the ESA module and all that stuff is on the left side.
