I have a 1988 50 hp force on a 17' blue fin sportsman. My questions are how is the relieability of these motors?I have heard alot of horror stories but you can hear the same about many others as well.Next... is it worth rebuilding...it appears to be in good shape, did run before i started the rebuild on the transom and deck but has weak compression.how readily availible are parts for these motors.I guess the big concern of mine is I got this boat for a good price($ 900) for the boat ,motor, and trailer. I am redoing the deck right now,the transom is completely redone. so should I rebuild the force or look for something newer to power this thing? Any words of advice here would sure be helpful........Thanks..

Re: 88' 50 hp force

good buy, i just bought a 86 bayliner, gal trailer, and a force 50. i paid 950. so far i have found parts for the motor online. the motor is pretty easy to work on and it seems to run pretty good. i lucked out, the compression is 130 in both cylinders. the carb is pretty much a tin can with a hole in it.
my advice, price the pieces to rebuild it and go from there. figure a used 50 will run at least 2k. if the cost is less than 2k, to rebuild, go for it!
