I have recently been given this boat. Its a 1988 bayliner 3.0 capri cuddy cabin. All the floors and hull are in good shape with no rot. The interior is in fair shape and should clean up well. The issue I am having is when I turn the key I can hear the starter engage but the motor does not turn over. This boat sat for about 4 years and me not ever having a boat before am turning here for a little help. I have had a few people tell me a few things to try but I figure I better start here with the people who know boats. What is a good starting point to figure this issue out. The guy I got it from said it ran when he parked it so I am guessing it wont take much to get it running. I know it was winterized when parked. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

....before you get too far ahead trying to start an engine that has been idle for four years:

Remove all the plugs, squirt a dose of your favorite flavor of penetrating lubricant into each cylinder and bar the engine over using the crank pulley bolt.
After it is determined that the engine is not stuck, we'll lead you onward with pre-lubing and later the electrical stuff. :)

It probably doesn't have a crank pulley bolt. It will be difficult to turn over by hand.

Pull the spark plugs, tighten alternator belt and use alternator pulley nut to turn engine

Thanks I will remove the spark plugs and shoot some PB blaster in there and try to turn the motor over by hand. If its not a go I can try to remove the outdrive to see if that is locked up. Any important tips if I need to get that far? I know the prop spins free and when put in gear it dont spin by hand. Thanks for the info I will keep you posted and hopefully I can figure this thing out. Thanks in advance again!!

Ok good news I got the motor to turn over by hand!! Although it wont turn over by the starter I have read other posts here to check the slave solonoid for the starter. Any tips or info on what needs to happen before I attemp to start the motor would be great. I plan on changing the motor oil and the outdrive oil before starting. I have already drained all the gas out of the tank. Im just waiting on the PDF manual for the boat for the oil specs before draining and changing. Thanks again all the info here is helpful and makes things less stressful knowing I can come here for the help I may need along the way.

Take the starter off and bench test it. If needed you can fix it yourself, or take it to an auto-electic shop.

Once you get the starter problem figured out, do not start the engine without pre-lubing the engine or it will be running dry.

You could be hearing the slave solenoid clicking and not the starter solenoid. See if you are getting voltage to the starter solenoid when you try to start the engine, could be a bad slave solenoid or loose connection/wire. Make sure all connections are clean and tight. I got stuck one day because of the slave solenoid, loose connection... I removed all the wires, tightened up the nuts on the solenoid, reattached wires and the problem was fixed. One of the terminals on the solenoid was loose.

To pre-lube, remove spark plugs, ground coil wire and crank the engine over with starter for 10-15 seconds, let it sit for 15 minutes to cool starter, crank over engine for 10-15 seconds, let cool 15 minutes,,, do this 4 times. You should see the oil pressure gauge registering something at the end, look at the gauge. Once primed, install plugs and wires and start the engine.

Dead battery and or corrosion on the connections would be first on my list, you have clicking sounds and that's good, now just check all the high amp connections, battery starter solenoid.

Ayuh,... I Agree,... 'n the Grounds too....

When ya get it to turn over on the starter,...
Crank it 20 seconds a minute a few times to pump that fresh oil through it...
Then hook the coil wire back up,+ try lightin' it...

Don't forget to turn on the Hose when crankin' or startin' it...
