Very often when I place the boat in gear (especially in reverse) the motor dies. The motor seems to start just fine and idles okay, but placing into gear gives me trouble. Sometimes I will have to try to finesse the movement as I place it into gear or sometimes I just move it really quick to make it go. It is not uncommon to have the engine die 20 times or more when placing in gear. I have tried using Seafoam in the gas and spraying Deep Creep to into the carb to clean, but still no success. Does anyone know how to fix?

Thanks!

Do you have a Manual?

It needs a linkage and synchronization done on it. . . by the book.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the post. No, I don't have a manual.

I would love to be able to do it myself without having to send to a shop.

You can click the icon for manuals at the lower left of this page to order one directly from iboats.

Wasn't my post but thanks for the info. my 88 force 85HP does exactly the same thing, runs & starts great just dies if i don't give it good gas putting it into gear.

i noticed a similar situation with my 150...the towershaft arm and interlock lever where uneven when I bought my boat.....after getting the shifting correct I noticed the towershaft had room to move towards the interlock lever...closing this gap helped with the stalling issues when putting in gear...the adjustments drove me half crazy....the biggest thing outta the whole deal was the two parts (towershaft arm and interlock lever) being level with each other when it shifted forward the tower arm wouldn't clear and it was like you said a finesse thing to get to go without stalling..

closing the towershaft arm gap does move the idle higher as well so it's a combo of shifting, cable placement and the gap I spoke of...

First thing what are the rpm's at neutral/in the water and the motor warm.Should be 750-800.
Do a compression/spark test.

Turn up the idle a bit? You probably just need to rebuild the carbs, change plugs, polish the engine a bit so it knows you love it. Ethanol might be the culpit, leaving it's evil carbon building minions to reap havock in your fuel system.
