88 Head Job

Listening to the alarm and having just replaced the full water pump and thermostats, I decided to get further and took the cyl head cover off my 88 SPL. It didn't look bad so I went further and took off the heads. Didn't look too bad there either and I sure loved digging in. Going to the local marine shop it was recommended to have the heads re-surfaced now that they are off. I see no wear and tear on them, is this just to get added "service" money since I am doing the job and not them? Like when the car dealer has your car and tells you your injectors need to be clean when the car was running great. Just my concerns and to see if it is standard to have heads re-surfaced. Thanks in advance.

Re: 88 Head Job

Personally I wouldn't surface the heads especially if there is no blown head gasket. You need to be very careful about taking material off the heads. A lot depends on what folks call "surfacing" or a "skim" cut or anything like that. If it were mine I'd put some sandpaper on glass and gust figure 8 them over the glass until the old gasket etc is gone.

While you have the heads off change the deflectors.
