I am new to the boating world. I just purchased 87 Champion bass boat with a rebuilt 88 Mercury 115. We have been working out a few issues and have a few things that still seem to be a problem.

1. Speedometer does not work. Think the plastic piece (stbd stern) is the part that checks speed. I am used to small hole in I/O merc that does this function. Lower unit seems to have similar hole with piece of metal stuck in hole. I don't know which one to focus on or what to do.

2.Tach does not function. Worked when first too out. Battery died. We charged the battery and now the tach does not work. Is thsi related and what do I do to look at this?

3. Shifting into forward or reverse engine dies. If I push throttle all the way up or down after starting the boat it shifts and goes. If I move slowly up or back the engine dies. What do I look at?

4. Bow switch pannel questions? Accessory plug, trim toggle switch and switch for the trolling motor. The trolling switch has 3 positions - 12V charge / 12V (run)/ 12-24 what do these mean? The trolling motor does not work when switched on the pedal to 24V if switch on pannel is on 12/24

5. Hard to start. After sitting for about 10 minutes the boat is difficlut to start. Almost seems like battery is low because it sounds like it is difficlt to turn over. If I pump enough on the bulb, choke and start (with neutral and full open) it will eventually start up. Where should I start?

Hope this is not too much in one topic, but I am so lost. When it works it works... when it doesn't it doesn't... kinda frustrating....

Thanks,
Mike

Re: 88 Mercury 115 / 87 Champion issues

1. Lower unit does have such a hole. If you take down the lower unit there is iether an alan screw or the hose nipple for hooking the speedometer. You need to clear the passage between the hole and the nipple (and / or add the nipple too)

2. The rectifier is VERY likely bad - it's a full wave bridge. Test all 4 diodes per the manual.

3. Many things. You need to run through the basic tuning procedure to set the idles and the idle mix. L

4. Not a clue - sorry

5. The battery IS low because it's not charging due to that blown rectifier. If you get it fully charged and it's still hard to start when warm - I'd combine this with #3 and assume the carbs might need some cleaning in the low speed circuit.

You really need the service manual - and patiance to get it set up right. Once it's *there* you'll love it.

-W
