Have done many searches and readings on this problem. I have an '88 175 with the old style pump; no check valves in line. When tilted forward, and to the port, I still get oil leaking out of the bottom carb (feeds 5 and 6) but it is on the high side (#5, not the lower that feeds #6) Having read up on these problems, oil can leak in either through the oil lines past the check valve built in to the pump, or through the seal around the drive shaft on the pump. If it is the later, wouldn't I get oil leaking out of the carb on the #6 side when tilted to port. As it stands now, oil is definetly coming from the starboard side that feeds #5, which is higher than the #6 side. This leads me to think the check valve for #5 cylinder carb (carb 3 on the bottom), is leaking.
If this is indeed the case, can I splice in the new check valves for the new style pump to get me through the summer?
Thanks for the help.
