75 Ford 302 888 I drive 19 ft SeaRay

Replaced impeller in lower unit a few weeks ago, now I notice a slight clinking sound while engine is running even if it is not in gear.

With a stethoscope I isolated the sound to appear to be coming from an area vertically even with the water intake vents and and aft of those vents.

I have a back up lower unit and looked in it at the same area....it appears to be an open cavity ..........

the sound is not steady.....clink..........clink..clink.......clink....in other words no rhythmic pattern.......

any suggestions.....?

I was pondering the thought of maybe I had dropped something in there when I had it off..... but it is definitely metallic and looking at the parts breakdown in the manual I cannot figure out what it could be......

i'm not the pro, but am gonna guess it might be the first signs of a shift cable going bad. the tick tick could be the clutch dog not quite disengageing the propshaft.......when not in gear. every part is moving in yer drive, except the prop shaft.......i'll be interested in what other have to say. as mine intermittantly does the same thing.........

the open cavity is where yer gettin cooling water from. it goes into the open cavity and up to the impeller pump.....

well that makes sense to me since I just changed the u-joint bellows, so I will check the shift cable, I may have gotten it out of adjustment when I disconnected it.

Well I adjusted the shift cable, it was off a few rotations of the brass barrel....but noise is still there just not as bad....definitely from lower unit though.....

with a stethoscope I hear it doing an intermittent clack...clack...clack...moved the scope around on the junction where the shaft gearing make the 90 deg and couldn't isolate it any more....
