I am trying to connect a newer tach that uses un-rectified (AC) cycles/poles per alternator revolution to figure out RPMs. I have the original "one post" alternator but unless I take it apart I can't tell how many poles the stator has. Does anyone know the answer to the number of poles? Next question, where and how do you connect the "SIG" signal wire to the alternator? Finally, not to overdue this, how does the tachometer compensate for difference sizes in pulleys between the motor and alternator pulleys?

Sounds to me like you are trying to use an outboard tach on an IO. IO Tachs run off the coil, not the alternator.

Those tachos are meant for use with an OUTBOARD engine, not a sterndrive. There is no place on the alternator to connect to. I suggest you select '8' on the back of the tacho and connect it to the points side of the coil, like everyone else does....
