Am trying to find Bosch Platinum+4 plugs that can safely replace the Champion QL77JC4 in hopes to enhance starting capability. Engine is in excellent condition, compression excellent, powerpacks aok, timing right on, carbs clean. The automotive folks I have talked to can't seem to give info I'm looking for regarding these plugs, number applicable, etc.

Hi Principal, welcome aboard. I'm curious as to what type of starting problems you're having. Those Champions are popular plugs...

In technician training courses, they have a saying that goes "Garbage in, garbage out..."
You say everything is ok, but you've got to help us by defining "ok". Basic CD Ignition theory: magnets attached to the outer rim of the flywheel (when viewed from the under-side) rotate around the charge coils to produce somewhere between 250-300 volts. This voltage is stored in a charge capacitor in the power pack. Another magnet attached to the hub of the flywheel rotates past sensor coils, the sensor coils (1 for each cylinder) generate 1 to 3 volts. The lo-voltage is sent to the powerpack and controls ignition timing.

In order to develop the correct voltage, the engine has to turn fast enough (battery fully charged?). Too slow and you've got "garbage in..." Can you tell us what the charge coil voltage is?

1988/89 was the time-frame "QuickStart" was introduced - does this enine have it and if so, has its function been tested? To determine if your motor has this feature, look at the port temp switch wire(s). If its got QuickStart, they'll be 2 wires, 1 tan, 1 white with a blck stripe.

-John

If your motor has QuickStart then I recommend you check out the following thread which could possibly offer a very simple solution (I have and others have had this problem starting the engine cold).

Dhadley's post had the answer;

Evinrude 115 starts hard
