I have a automotive test meter that allows you to test for rpms where can i easily test and verify rpms with this meter? i need wire colors and locations.
just had carbs rebuilt and when I put in at lake it shows 4000 rpm at idle but it sounds alot less. killed it and took her home need to verify asap dont want to blow it up.
I have a evinrude repair manual but as we all know its pretty general and confusing at best.

Your oOutboard creates the tach signal from the stator through the voltage regulator/rectifier. The system counts pulses from the stator-has nothing to do with the number of cylinders. A marine tach can be connected to the grey wire which runs from a terminal strip next to the engine to the control box. If you can locate that wire in the wire loom at the control box, that is your signal point. Set the tach pointer on the back to 6.

At worst, an automotive tach won't work with your 2-stroke outboard; at best, the reading will be twice the actual RPMs.

What kind of leads does your test meter have?

if your tach has both a "6c" and a "6p" setting, "6p" is correct.
