I have an 89 25 Evinrude electric start that has not been run much at all over the last few years and is a little rough at idle. It starts right up runs great once you give it a little gas and mid to WOT is fine but in N at idle it is rough and Saturday I had to give it a little gas while I was getting decoys up to keep it from cutting off. Is this an adjustment issue or am I looking at a carb rebuild?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like the Carb need good cleaning or possible rebuilt specially been setting for few years as you said ...If it was me I will Clean them real good first thengo from there Change the plugs with new set as your idle could be effected by old plugs as well

Thanks, I really don't have the money for a rebuild right now (wife is out of work) and with duck season in full swing don't want to be without the motor. The motor was never stored with gas in the carb I always ran it out and I know that does not always avoid issues. I have a can of seafoam would that be the best thing to run through to try and clean the card? If so mix it in with a whole 6 gallon and run it through since it is not that bad? Thanks again.

Instead of doing a rebuild just take it apart and give it a good clean. Seafoam might help. also have you tried to adjust the low speed needle. Bottom the needle out than turn it out one and a half turns and work ur way in listen to the motor see if it smooths out.

Yes try clean the Carb is a must , Health Check you plugs see what they look like , When was the last time you changed them ..Just do the simple stuff that wont coast you much at all ...Then run Seafoam or Sta-bil

Thanks... The plugs were put in there in the spring of 09 and the motor has only been run 5-6 times since then. My dad had not used the motor for several years (he was sick) and it was stored properly. When I pulled the motor from storage I changed the plugs, fluid etc... and the motor started right up and ran great it had a little rough idle but it had not been run in a while. I need to pull them and see what they look like, just have not had a chance.

I am honestly scared to death to pull the carb off and clean it for fear of screwing something up and making matters worse.

One trick i learned for things that am not familiar with ..is to take pictures before disassembling them ..do that as you go ...You will at least have something to reference to in case you end up lost ...

Thanks Guys, I am going to give cleaning it a shot, I ordered a kit so I can make sure that I have fresh gaskets and any thing else I may need.

The job is not hard at all, a little pictures and a some common sence go a long way.

I was afraid to do mine but some of the info here made it very easy.

I'll probably get smashed for this suggestion, but here goes anyway.....
I hardly ever get carb kits unless something is bad, and then I try to order just the part I need if I can. I hardly ever need carb parts. The main body gaskets are rarely bad. I need packing washers and floats some, and a new needle and seat sometimes if the old one is grooved. But I'll bet in your case just cleaning the low speed jet would do the trick. You could probably just take the top section of that carb if it's like I think it is and not even split the carb.

It's okay jbj, I'll back ya.:D

It's a good idea to start small to fix things if you're on a tight budget and still need the motor. I believe it is something minor. There could be just a little bit of gunk behind the slow speed needle.

These are simple to work on so don't worry just take care.
If you have the kit then take the carb off and dismantle it, removing everything you can. Put all parts in a container so that you don't lose some thing. Don't struggle with jets, for the most part they will clean if you use Gunk Carb and Parts cleaner kit and soak the parts per instructions on the can. About $10 from auto parts store. Of course it is better to remove the jets but it takes the correct tools and some know how.
Spray cleaners rarely do a good job and can damage parts.
If the carb is real dirty you may have to soak twice. Wash off with water and use compressed air to blow everything clean and dry. Reassemble using new gaskets and Blue Loctite on the screws. Check that the float is sitting parallel to the carb body when it is upside down. If not, take the float off again and bend the metal actuator plate slightly to achieve the setting. When you have finished always use Stabil in your fuel.

stabill should always be used ? or just after a new carb kit?

Re: 89 25 Evinrude idle a little rough

Thanks Guys, I am going to work on it when I am on vacation next week, no time now need to hunt :) I have done a lot of research and it appears to be pretty straight forward.

Update.... I got home and it was still light and the hose was not frozen so I started it up and tried to adjust the low speed needle and that really did not help... While I was looking at it good I see that I need to take the electric starter off to get the carb off and I can't for the life of me see how it comes off and the SELOC manual really did not help. So any help would be appreciated.

Re: 89 25 Evinrude idle a little rough

I would first try fresh noneth premium fuel, mixed 50:1.
Also try adjusting the idle mixture screw.
In the 25 hp johnson I had it ran great with fresh fuel, but once the fuel started getting alittle old the motor did not start well and it did not idle smooth.
If you do not use much fuel each trip I would put fuel stabilizer in it.
The 25hp I was using was about a 1995 with very low hours.
