Hey there just picked up a 89 Wellcraft Classic 170. First time boater. Used to be a car mechanic for many years. The boat had a cracked stern drive which was his reason for selling noticed when boat was put in the water for the season. My question is I’m looking at getting a used one and just wondering what I should look for and how I verify the drive is in forward which I keep seeing reference to.

Verify the gear ratio 1.98, clean oil no water or rust thats about all you can do without a full teardown and inspection

When removing the drive just make sure the throttle/gear selector is in forward.

Here's some good info from achris that will help.

And welcome.

You can also get a new complete sterndrive from iBoats made by SEI.

I have no clue why that iBoats doesn't list who makes the products like these that they sell. But they do sell Mercruiser OEM sterndrives and SEI sterndrives. The SEI ones come with a great no fault 3 year warranty. Can't tell you what the Merc warranty is, but it won't be no fault.
