89 4.3 mercruiser coil question

i have been having problems with my boat bogging at wot.been going through everything eliminated a fuel issue.now im into the electronics.my question is i have the thunderbolt ignition when i took the coil off to inspect it i seen it was the old type for external resistor could this be my problem?thanks ben

External resistor coils are fine.

Have you given your boat a full tuneup? New points(if required), plugs, rotor and cap?

Have you verified that you are getting proper spark advance at high RPM? Use an advance type timing light and measure your total advance and compare thast to what is specified in your service manual.

Ben, Does the coil have a part number? If so, you can match it up with your ignition system. I would not think that you have a true external resistor coil. You may have a resistor for radio suppression.

If you haven't already done so, a new dissy cap, wires and plugs can sometimes wake up the ign system. These are all avail at your local marine store. That motor shouldn't have points.

no it dont have pionts.the only thing i can find on the coil is 5012 external resister coil.i can also hear the oil in it slosh around i dont think thats right either.

i went all the way through the fuel system all filters rebuilt the carb and did a pressure test on the pump.i hope a coil fixes it im at my ends with it
