89 4.3. V6.... cracked head(s)???

I'm back! Got my oil leaks all taken care of, now on to the new problem. When replacing the intake gasket for the second time I took the mechanical choke tube out, and left it out (it met a bad fate - on accident. So I left it off to either fix it or modify it and reinstall it. I had a few moments this afternoon where it wasn't hotter then the inner circle of hell and it wasn't raining - so I decided to test run the motor, dial in the timing, etc...
Well.. it fired up and I noticed that it sounded like it had one heck of an exhaust leak... start poking around and low and behold the mechanical choke area is pumping exhaust air right up through the hole. Correct me if I am wrong (at this point I hope that I am) but actual exhaust gases are NOT supposed to be in there... it's just supposed to get hot to open the choke, not get get heated by actual exhaust?
So now I am thinking that this great 70 hour rebuilt included cracked heads?

I am so close to taking this boat right back to the guy I got it from and parking it in his friggin' living room.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you need a block of plate if not using the chock as its a crossover and exhaust gas does circulate through it..

Ayuh,..... Agreed,... The choke stove is burnt up, exhaust is present in the intake's cross-over carb heater,....

the choke "stove" got mangled (long story) so I left that piece off until I can get a block off plate. I knew there would be heat... but actual exhaust? So I am probably okay - just put a block off plate on it and the world will be good.... unicorns will once again roam freely across the Earth?

Soooo... since finding a choke stove is about as easy as finding a mermaid or unicorn. I'm thinking.... JB-Weld the holes shut and put the plate back on? since it's the pipe that is messed up, not the plate itself. of my two 3lb coffee CANs full of bolts I don't have a single one that is close the size to stuff in the holes.
