89 40 horse thermostat problem

Can someone tell me why the thermostat would blow out? My son was using boat and it quit. I checked it today and found the cover off the thermostat and parts in bottom of housing. What would cause this to happen?

Maybe years of vibration. Have you replaced it with a new one and new bolts on the housing? I would be more worried if it overheated than why it came off. They are easy to replace on this engine. Might do a compression check and make sure it didn't overheat and score a piston or burn a ring before you replace it.

Thanks for reply.
Not sure about vibration issue. I did have a new water pump impeller installed this winter. I'll check compression. I just don't want to replace parts and have it do it again.
