89 40hp Evinrude bogging problems

I've gone through and looked for answers to this and got some, but nobody had the same thing I have happen. My motor ran great from the begining of May until end of July. Then it sat for just about a month in the water. I finely got out to fish again and when I started my motor it only sounded like one cylinder was firing. I pushed the prime button down and it fired up. I let it warm up and when I went to go it just bogs down like the fuel isn't getting in. If I'm at WOT and hit the primer it goes great. Let up on the primer and slowly goes to about nothing. First question is what could setting like that cause? and will running the engine using the primer that way burn out the cylinder? Also, I am running some seafoam in the gas to hopfully clean up anything with the carb. I'm hoping I don't have to pull it out of the water yet even though it's getting to the end of the season.

Improvement when running by hitting primer indicates a fuel delivery problem. I wouldn't run the engine much more without figuring out the cause. I had a similar problem and it was a clogged jet in lower carb. The high speed jet is at the bottom of the carb - crud has a way of making its' way there.<br /><br />You might get lucky by pulling the airbox off the front of the carbs, then get a funnel and a container and pull the drain plug at the bottom of each carb. Have an assistant pump the primer ball at the fuel tank to flush fuel through the carb ( a medium sized safety pin fits exactly in the orifice in my carbs - '88 40 hp). Stick the pin in there and flush the fuel out, both carbs. Run again briefly. If problem not resolved (crud too big to make it through the orifice) you'll likely have to yank the carbs, clean and rebuild (which you might want to do anyway). Good luck! <br /><br />(Great motors - after cleaning mine out, we've been slalom skiing and wakeboarding every weekend - no problems whatsoever pulling my son and I out of the water!!)

Sounds like it's time to clean the carbs. Remove & clean & rebuild with new parts.

Would it go from running great to nothing just like that? I would have thought if the carbs were gumming up, it would have some signs of it while running. Would moisture or the gas going bad cause any of the same symtoms. I agree, I need to clean the plugs which I figured on doing next spring, but not now.

When hitting the primer, that puts extra fuel into the motor. You said it ran great when you hit the primer which indicates the motor is not getting enough fuel. Has nothing to do with the plugs.

Sorry, I ment the carbs not the plugs. To much going through my head.

Re: 89 40hp Evinrude bogging problems

I'm going up to where my boat is this weekend and hopefully it's just crud like fishnfiend said or I'm going to try emptying my gas and put fresh in. It just seems funny to me that it was running great and without warning it doesn't. If there got to be too much moisture in the gas, would that have the same symtoms? Of coarse if there was moisture I would think the Seafoam would have taken it out. If nothing else I'll pull it out of the lake for the year and rebuild the carbs.<br /><br />Thanks

Imagine running water through a common kitchen funnel. Then drop a marble into the funnel and see what happens. The fluid stops running "just like that." Same with carb and a piece of crud.<br /><br /><br />"If nothing else I'll pull it out of the lake for the year and rebuild the carbs."<br /><br />I tried to give you some "on the water" repair ideas. Heck, even if you have to pull the carbs you don't need to take the boat off the water unless you want to. A few screws, four nuts and it's off! Of all the problems you could have, this is probably the easiest. (this assumes that your tank vent is clear, you are not leaking gas, sucking air, etc.)<br /><br />These engines are pretty trouble free, but they do require SOME maintenance.<br /><br />Have fun.

Thanks fishnfiend. The biggest problem I have is the time. I'm in the middle of remodeling a newly purchased cabin that "others" seem to want done now. Hopefully I'll get the time to tear into it this weekend. I'll let you know. Thanks again.
