89 50hp force shaft seal?

Just installed impeller on 89 50hp force. Its my understanding that there is supposed to be a rubber seal ontop of the collar that is located 2inches from the top of the drive shaft when the lower unit is removed. A marina told me the seal is up in the motor. Can I see it up in there? What does this seal do? I put the collar back on the drive shaft 2 and 1/16 inches with the groove up.

If it's the rubber seal, then it just holds some grease on the splines of the drive shaft. They often stay up in the motor when removing the leg. Take some grease and lightly coat the drive shaft splines. Take a coat hanger and pull the rubber seal out and slide it onto the splines of the drive shaft until it seats on the collar. Re-install the lower unit.
