Just rebuilt my 89' 70hp Evinrude. Had engine completely disassembled. While I had everything apart I also put on a new water pump and new seals in the lower unit. I did not completely disassemble gear box but just replaced the input and output shaft main seals (which had been leaking) and shift rod o-ring. I did unscrew the shift rod from the lower unit. Got everything back together and engine runs like a top. However now the remote shift cable linkage does not link up correctly. With remote in neutral the engine is in forward gear and remote won't move into the forward position only reverse. Is there a wrong way to hook up the shift rod between the detent shifter on the lower unit and the shift lever that goes under the carbs? Or do I have something messed up with the Bellcrank, spark advance, throttle linkage?

Did you set the correct height of the rod before you put the lower unit back on?

No I apparently did not. Is that covered in the lower unit section of the repair manual?

It would be in the factory one. I have a selhoc manual and went through it looking for the spec and didn't see it in there.

I believe your motor is the same as my 1998 60hp as far as shift linkage goes. Which is min 551mm and max 552mm with target of 551.5mm or shoot for 21 and 23/32"s +/- 1/32 . But I found it easier to use the metric.

You measure with shifter in neutral and measure from the flange of the lower unit where it needs the mid section , to the center of the hole in the shift shaft. I taped a drill bit about the side of the hole at 551.5mm on the metal yardstick. And measured from the flange to the hole. So basically I adjusted it till the bit went through the center of the hole while it was on the flange .

This is probably confusing. There is a youtube video that explains it. Let me look them up.

Or this one is the technique I used

Someone with more experice should verify your model length but was thinking all the 2 and 3 cyl motors in about a 15 or 20 year span were the same but I could be wrong.

Need model # for shift rod height. Or factory manual, usually section 6. you need to know what size mid it is, could be short or long shaft, they may hae even made 25's then, just cant know w/out a model #.
