Re: 89 70hp Yamaha cdi problem

Riverbandit, I recently had similiar problems with my yamaha115. The guys here saved me alot of time. First, in the CDI take off the white wire (should be in the middle on the left side of the CDI unit). With the white wire off turn the motor over and see if you get spark. If you do, your motor will run but will have to be choked out to shut it off. In this case either your Kill switch is bad, or it is grounding out somewhere. That's the easy fix. If that does not work in the manual for your motor It has a trouble shooting section which will show you how to test the resistance of all your coils and of your CDI unit.
If there is still a problem one of the guys here will be able help you further.
Hopefully its just the kill switch.

Re: 89 70hp Yamaha cdi problem

I've had the same problem on my 90HP Yamaha. My mechanic advised me these CDI are just about faultless. His advise was too pull the flywheel off and spray the ignitors with CRC contact cleaner or use brakecleen. We did this. Connected everything up and old girl burst into life and hasn't looked back.
Has your motor been stored for a period of time and do you spary the motor with WD40 or the like? If so the above may be a very cheap fix

Good luck

Snapperman
