I have an 85hp 1989 force outboard. I just bought it two months ago. Previous owner let sit in garage for two years. It is on a cajun bass boat. The motor runs great once it starts but takes five minutes to get going. Brand new plugs are black already. should i clean the bowls on the carb or check electrical??? Would like to try inexpensive measures first.

Sounds like improper fuel mixture or maybe engine running cool causing black plugs. If it's been sitting carbs should hsve been ceaned first thing. Also check thermostat for proper engine temp and timing.

thanks for advice superman. it started right up on water muffs. It may have something to do with water because it would not start in the lake. I am wondering if exhaust pressure has anything to do with it?? anyone know?
