89' 9.9hp Johnson Questions

I purchased a duck hunting boat that came with a 89' 9.9hp Johnson. I was told that all it will need is a prop bushing and prop. The boat is 16' flat bottom semi-v.

Here is the current state of the motor (the brown is paint, not rust.. lol)

My questions are
A) what diameter and pitch is recommended for this setup 9.25x11? 9.25x10?
B) Judging by the picture, what other items will I need to fully assemble the prop?

My after market service manual says you need a bottom thrust washer,Prop and bushing, top thrust washer.castle nut and cotter pin.
Prop size would depend on the all up load. These may vary slightly depending on the year.
The 11" pitch probably would be ok for you and a buddy and some decoys. Maybe a 10'" for a heavy load.

I really do not think that your motor is a 1989 model 9.9 HP !!---According to the picture posted here.-------Not uncommon for motors to be mis-identified.--I see these scams all the time.--Try a 9.5 HP last produced in 73.

I agree, that doesn't look like a 9.9 lower unit. I thought all 9.9's had thru hub exhaust.

Yup, that's a 9 1/2. Not a 9.9.

As far as year goes, you'll need the model number. Look for the casting (freeze) plug on the side of the engine block. There should be numbers on it.

yep, i agree with the " talk to the seller" thing. that 9.5 is in no way comparable to a 1989 9.9. some guys ( very few) like them, but i personally wont take one if its offered to me for free. jmo

Don't be discouraged yet. I know there are many bad things with the turtle motor but I have one. The '73. And I have had nothing go wrong with it (Knock On Wood). It still has the original points and fires up faithfully every year. As for the prop, may be hard to find but I think BRP still sells for $150. 038594

On the plus side there are props available here at iboats. It appears it only requires a prop, drive pin a nut and cotter pin.
Depending on your load if the motor is healthy a 8 1/2" pitch will work. Otherwise perhaps one size smaller.

Re: 89' 9.9hp Johnson Questions

Well the good thing is that I got the boat, trailer, and motor for pennies. I verified the model number and it is indeed a 9.5hp from 1972. I cleaned out the gas lines/tank and put new fresh gas/oil and tried to fire it up. Started on the third pull and ran for a few seconds and died.

I was nervous to start it again because I didn't see a pee stream. After inspection I couldn't even find the output where it would come from. Did these early years not have output pee holes? If they did, where the hell are they?

Would a 8 1/8" x 8" pitch prop work fine? A local shop has one for cheap.

at least a couple of 9.5 threads in progress -- might check them out, and maybe start a new thread. specific issues, or maybe not up to that yet?

There is a rubber hose that goes from the block to the lower cowling.----Water should pour out of it shortly after start-up.--Lots of water in a few seconds.

Re: 89' 9.9hp Johnson Questions

I see many, many ads that advertise 9.5s as 9.9s as the 9.9 will fetch more money. Sneaky buggers.
