I had my 89 Bayliner Capri 5.0Ho out on the lake this weekend. I just bought if recently and has 160hrs on it. After running my wife and daughter on a tube I started hearing what sounds to be a air leak from the right rear when looking at the the engine from the front. Seems to get louder under acceleration. Anyone have an idea where i should be looking for an exhaust leak, or know of a weak point on the exhaust to check? I'm new to boats but know the 5.0 engines pretty well. Thanks for all the help.

Not an expert here but as far as I know if there was a leak in the exhaust you would have a water leak. Maybe what you heard was the carb? If you have tks instead of choke it could just be the tks warming up until the engine gets warm.

No water coming in. Hull is dry as a bone. It is definitely an air leak of sorts. I tried to look under the engine and could not see anything. Looks like I may have to take the rear seats and wood out to get a look inside. I had it on the lake for about 2 hrs and didn't happen until the last 10 mins. Took it out of the water when I started hearing the noise.

To find the leak squirt some automatic transmission fluid down the carburetor. It will not take much when the smoke comes out.

Well I found the leak and think it is a bad find, broken metal is never good in my book. Looks to be where lower unit connects with the motor. Missing a piece of metal that looks like it broke off. Does this mean I will need a new lower unit? The piece missing is about the size of a quarter. Have a picture but says few is too big to load on here.

There are many software programs that will make the picture's file size small enough to be posted here. Can email via Outlook which has an easy resize dialogue box

Is the engine a Ford or. Chevy ? The Fords cylinder heads have rifling front to rear for emissions when used for automotive use. The holes are either threaded with a bolt installed or a soft metal plug to close the hole. The front of the opposite head is the same as the rear where the leak is. The holes are located on the outside edge near the mounting surface. Get a mirror and look closely.
