Hello

Iv'e been working on a 89 Blackmax 150 XR-4 and had a couple questions.

Just did the Poppit complete, Water pump complete, Fuel pump, T-stats and Warning horn.

Used to get 0-1 Idle
3-4 50%
7 WOT PSI

Now I get 1-2 Idle
7-8 50%
22 WOT PSI

Used to go from 1/2 to 3/4 on temp gauge and always stay hot until shutdown. Be alittle better at WOT but never to move temp down.

Now It's same, idle but alittle worse. Goes alittle higher past 3/4 mark, but anything 7-8 to 22 WOT it seems like the heat is under control and temp never breaks 1/4 and change :) .

I replaced everything in the poppit and put back the way it was, and now get a small leak out the vent hole. Anyone know what it might be. Also what are the torque settings for the screws? I think the leak is contributing to my Idle over heat be worse. Lemme know what you think.

Warning horn sounds sometimes for key turn sometimes not. Also I get the Oil beep-beep-beep and it will match the engine RPM.// Fast RPM Fast beep// Slow RPM slow beep// Seems like it is the plastic gear for oil pump about to go or it is slipping due to me letting the motor overheat before I got the water pump. Either way Im nervous and want to look into Pre Mixing until mabey I can rebuild pump. Is a oil pump cap all I need or are there other parts? Whats the deal?

Thanks,
Damian

Re: 89' Blackmax help

You have several things going on w/your motor. The poppet should not be leaking. Take it back apart and tighten the center screw which holds the poppet together. You are leaking around the diapharm. It does not take much torque to tighten the small bolts on the poppet cover, be careful you don't break them off. Your chances of leaking around the gaskets are slim.
You water pressure at idle is good but the WOT is too high for that engine. It should be 12psi max. I think once you get the poppet fixed right that should fix that problem.
You probably should be premixing you oil gas until you figure out the oil problem. You have to tear down the engine to fix the oil pump if the gear is bad on the crank, you can pull the oil pump and see if there are slivers or sheared parts visible. You can loosen the cao on the oil tank on the engine and see if oil is being pushed up from the boat tank, The pressure is fed off the lower starboard side of the block. There are many posts here about that type of problem. Why do you think you need a new oil cap? You need to read some of these posts and do some trouble shooting. I blew a 1989 200 HP Mercury and have worked around many of those problems. There a are feqw guys here that direct you trouble shooting charts etc.
You should have an OEM manual, I just sold mine a couple weeks ago, sorry. I still have a boat oil tank and a boat oil tank cap.

Re: 89' Blackmax help

If you've been seriously overheated, there's a very good chance that you've damaged the plastic gear on the crank that drives the oil pump.

Either add oil to the main tank till you debug the VRO, or remove the VRO and run premix from here on. The VRO on the mercury V6 is very reliable EXCEPT when it's been seriously overheated.

hope it helps
