Hello,
I've many posts regarding VRO failure. I just bought a used boat and wanted to know if I decide to bypass the VRO and premix, where should I plug the oil tube? In the oil reservoir I am assuming?

The VRO unit is working fine right now but I've been reading the horror stories and and thinking about bypassing before I can into trouble.

JB

(VRO Pump Conversion To Straight Fuel Pump)

You can convert the VRO pump into a straight fuel pump, eliminating the oil tank and VRO pump warning system, but retain the overheat warning setup by doing the following:

1 - Cut and plug the oil line at the engine so that the oil side of the VRO pump will not draw air into its system. Trace the wires from the back of the VRO to its rubber plug (electrical plug) and disconnect it.

2 - Trace the two wires from the oil tank to the engine, disconnect those two wires, then remove them and the oil tank.

3 - Mix the 50/1 oil in the proper amount with whatever quanity fuel you have. Disconnect the fuel line at the engine. Pump the fuel primer bulb until fuel exits that hose with the tint of whatever oil you used. Reconnect the fuel hose.

That's it. If you want to test the heat warning system to ease your mind, have the key in the on position, then ground out the tan heat sensor wire that you'll find protruding from the cylinder head. The warning horn should sound off.

Re: 89 Evinrude 70 hp- VRO

Thanks! One more question. The aluminum prop on the motor comes to within 1/4" to an 1/8" of the lower unit. That doesn't seem right. I called the local dealer and he asked for the prop numbers. It has a 14 X 19 prop on it which he said is correct? I looked in Cabelas magazine and the largest prop listed for my boat is 13 3/4" . I'm trying to find out what prop came on the motor from the factory. Any insight would be appreciated!

The usual OMC prop would be a 13-1/4x17. OMC manufactured a assortment of props which included a 14x13. There was no listing of a 14x19 by OMC that I could find.

However, the prop would need to be matched to the engine depending on what type boat it was installed on.

That engine hits its horsepower at 5000 rpm, and the top rated rpm (WOT) is considered between 5000 to 6000 rpm.

If the engine is in proper condition, on the boat, at full throttle, with the proper propeller, the tachometer should approach 6000 rpms (usually around 5800 rpm), but it must not exceed 6000 rpms (unless you have a craving to rebuild the engine).

The engine is a 3 cylinder. It is mounted on a 16ft Northwoods aluminum fishing boat. I'm assuming with the 14 X 19 the RPMS would tend to be lower but there would be more top end?

Joe, will this proceedure also work on a 1998 Johnson 200?

Check this site out for prop sizes.

web page

Or:

HERE

I also have a 1991 70 Rude with a 14 X 13 Prop on it and it comes within 1/4" of the lower unit. No problem! OMC does make a 14 X 19 prop(176215 14" x 19"), as does Michigan prop.

Re: 89 Evinrude 70 hp- VRO

Thanks for all the follow-ups. I was trying to find out if the 14 X 19 is factory or if the guy I bought the boat from put the biggest prop on the motor that would fit. I wouldn't mind going back to stock size. He mentioned that top end was ~ 40 and but it was a little slow out of the hole.

One other item... How do I tell if the gear case is large or small?

If it were me, I would go with a 14 X 17 prop for better hole shot. Just watch the WOT RPM's. Your gearcase is the large one. Same as mine!! You can always repitch the prop you have down to 17", too. Only cost about $40.00 at a prop shop. Then you will know how it performs without buying a new prop. The Michigan prop selector recommends a 14 X 17 prop for a boat your size. That should be close.
