How do you disconnect the shift linkage on this engine to remove the lower unit? I can see where the linkage connects under the carbs, but I'm not sure how to disconnect it. I ordered a service manual, but I won't be in until Monday and I'd like to take the boat out this weekend, but not until I change the water pump. I've replaced water pumps on Mercs, but never an Evinrude.

HDMac
You are looking at the end of the shift rod under the bottom carb. The shift rod is round except at the end it is flatened with a hole. You may have a small locknut and washer that removes from one side, or a pin with a cotter key that must be pulled out (long needle nose pliers). Wiggle the shift linkage or have somebody shift gears (rotate the prop so the gears/clutch don't jam) so that the shift rod is in the best position to work on it to take it off and back on. This is a nimble fingers operation so save the cool ones 'til it's done.
Backfire ;)

HDMac,
I recently replaced the water pump on my '89 88hp rude and was given a good tip on the disconnection of the shift rod from this board. First you should put it in reverse and disconnect the shift cable, then after you remove the cotter clip you must push the linkage in (instead of pulling it out). This will disengage the linkage from the shift rod. Also, there cannot be any presure from a hanging lower unit on the shiftrod/linkage, the lower unit must be all the way up.

Good luck........
