89 Force 85 hp flooded-
Motor starts first time, runs well mid to high rpm. If left to idle will die, often stalls when shifting into gear at idle speed. Wont restart smells fumy. Pull plugs, very wet. Will restart if plugs and cylinders are dried, or fuel line disconected and motor cranked until fuel line is mostly empty. Sprayed a can of OMC engine tune through carbs, replaced spark plugs. Motor has very low hours, was stored for several years.

Any suggestions regarding starting technique for flooded engine appreciated.

cisco

Check the puddle drains on the side of the block under the electronics. Should be 6 3/8th bolts. It is likely that the screens are plugged.

TMD

If the motor was stored for years, dropping the carbs for a 'bath' in cleaner would be a good idea. Could be a slightly leaky needle/seat allowing too much fuel for low speed operation.

Re: 89 Force 85 hp flooded

Much thanks for the replies. Ive taken the boat out a few more times since this first post. I've had the problem every time. Recently I was resorting to having someone in the back of the boat, pinch the gas line to get it started. On the way in last night we stopped to give a stranded boat some fuel. When I went to restart the engine, it fired right up.

I think my problem was using an inncorrect warm starting procedure. The engine seems to start fine if I leave the throttle all the way down at idle, and dont use the choke. Duh it all makes sense now. Starting with the throttle open, and using the ckoke was flooding the engine. I will do more testing, and if I find out anything else, I will add it to this post in case someone else has this problem.

Cisco
