I had asked about some issues earlier and a lot of comments about cleaning carbs, so pulling them I found it appeared previous owner had probably done the same as there was very minimal if any dirt/grit really, very fine in the bowl or elsewhere. All jets appeared clean and got aspirated with carb cleaner and air. When I got to #6 (#3 on engine 2) it was missing the spring and washer that go in the vertical "jet". I suppose that could be an issue, and that jet when I took it out, I didn't notice the orientation of the holes - does that matter on reinstall? I'm a greenhorn so please just tell me.

I did notice the recirculation (I'm calling it that) line at the bottom of the air handling cover wasn't even connected on one engine and barely slipped on the other, very weak. How big an issue is that? Looking inside the engine after the carbs came off - clean as any operating room - pristine would be appropriate.

Reason for tear down on #2 is requiring choke to stay running even on high idle until warm at least. Even when running, it needs some help, I was thinking fuel pump but everyone pointed to carb so I'm trying this. I did replace fuel lines.

Engine 1 backfired and in doing so split the low pressure exhaust hose wide open on start-up when I went to test my new fuel lines with #2 the other day. It "was" my good engine and now is very relluctant to even start. I ran great a week ago, ran for 45 min 3500 rpm, wouldn't start after we stayed anchored for a cold drink and sandwiches. So had to choke my way to the dock with #2. #1 did start after the backfire, ran for a while then died. I didn't see the split in the hose until later. Tons of water and smoke come in from there when running so I shut it off. I guess that means it was pumping water well enough?

I've only had this boat about a month but every trip is another mechanic adventure. Any help, as always, much appreciated.

Okay, I guess I didn't read your other posts because I can't remember this situation. And I also have to admit that switching back and forth between what seems like two engines, is a little hard to follow. Can you provide the engine and model, year numbers again and then talk about one engine and the problems with it and then the other engine in separate paragraphs... I am not too smart and really confused reading this. Pictures would be great as well because then we see what you are talking about... :sorry:

gm280,
Sorry, just frustrated and running on at the finger...
I have attached two photos. One shows both sets of carbs. At the bottom of the (right side bottom group) you can just see the attachment I mentioned as barely attached to a hose or unattached to a hose. Some kind of recycling I assume for excess or free gas that falls to the bottom of this pan.

In the second photo is a picture of the float side of the carb and the missing spring and washer I was asking if they were critical to having that engine run. This is the engine that would run if I bump choke every few seconds - 10-20 seconds. This is also looking down on the "vertical" jet that I was asking about orientation of the holes on the "Insert" that goes in that very central with a smaller jet inside of it. The one with holes is about 1/8" diameter, the one inside of it 1/16" diameter and the 1/8" protrudes all the way into the main cross-chamber of the carb.

The spring isn't an absolute need.
The washer should be there.
Bumping the choke to keep it running, means that the low speed jet isn't getting fuel, possibly clogged??
The tiny jet in the side of the post is the idle jet. Make sure it's clear.
Rebuild the fuel pump. Change all the hoses with Ethanol resistant hoses.
Get the parts and make the carbs all the same.
The spring holds the venturi tube in place.
Put it back in.

Some carbs were made with it some not?

MountainMan, any time you have to hit the choke to keep the engine running, you have low speed jet problems or even a fuel pump not keeping up properly. So like jerry suggested above, test the fuel pump and clean the carb(s) and make certain everything goes back as it is designed to go. I think that will fix your problem... :thumb:

Thanks guys, I suspected the fuel pump. What is the best way to test? Is there a schematic online for these motors? Source for parts?
