I just changed my impeller and i was putting the bottom unit back on and had trouble lining it up, but after messing with it a while i think i got it lined up. my question is how do i know if the splines are lined up and back together properly?

Lower unit fits up snug without too much torque on the bolts

it was snug and all bolts were tight when i started it up and tried to put it in gear i heard all kinds of clanking noises and the prop did not spin. ??

Oh Oh, Gotta take a looksee. Pull it back down and check it out. The clanking should have left evidence.(edit) By any chance, did you change the gear oil while you were changing the impeller? Did you remove the lower screw on the "side" of the unit? If so, the screw on the "bottom" is the correct one. A manual is needed to fix the prob.
