89 force,blown ph base gaskets

3rd time in shop,new itermediate plate,mid section has been surfaced as has the ph base,50 hp.blows on starbard side.1st time in bolts from adapter plate to ph were broken.got them out,had to go from 5/16 to 3/8...cured that prob.not the gaskets.any ideas.....thanks in advance :confused:

Some of the Mercury guys on Scream And Fly were saying they "roughed" up the two surfaces with either a bunch of small center-punch pricks of an engraving tool. Anything to give the gasket something to hang on too. They say the areas where the gasket has to seat is real narrow. I personally don' know.<br /><br />g'luck & c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Does this engine have the thermostat installed? If not, the problem is warpage due to unequal heat.<br />Dry gaskets only (no goop).

thanks hooty and 12...gasket areas are real narrow.roughed up with 80 grit,maybe not enough though.with lazer temp gun,engine never ran above 168degrees...thank u for the input.we'll give it a look.....happy boating
