I blew up a powerhead last year so I had the original powerhead bored, honed, and I rebuilt it over the winter. When I tore everything down I noticed the serrated fitting on the middle carb float bowl was loose and upon removing the carb from the manifold it fell off. I suspect that this is why I blew the powerhead. I ordered and recieved another float bowl, but this one is defferent. The motor is a 1989 j150stlcem and the original float bowl is a 398544 which has been replaced with a 327889. The 327889 is calling for new intermediate orifaces as theold ones have 1/4-20 thread and the new one calls for 8-32 thread. Any idea on where to get the 8-32 oriface?

Thanks in advance.

Any Evinrude or Johnson dealer can order them. Whoever got you the new bowl should be able to get the jets.

Re: 89 gt150 carb question

Likely you had plastic float bowls on that engine. They are a real problem. Not a matter of if, but when these bowls will warp. Their mating surface with the carb body warps with age. Usually these leak fuel into the lower cowling. Worse-they can suck air, and cause the engine to run lean, as you note. Suggest you change the other two float bowls to metal also. During the change, you will find: The bowl drains from the old bowls won't fit on the new bowls. The mains jets will fit as it, but the other small jet in the bowl has a different external thread, so you will have to change both those small jets. Check those small jets for the drill size (stamped on the side of the jets) then get a Bombardier dealer to order you the same size jet, but with different external threads which will match your new bowl. Your factory OMC service manual should have a master listing of all their jet sizes by part number and jet size.
