The other day it was suggested to me that I take a look at the exhaust cover gaskets on my engine. I was able to remove the outer exhaust cover with little problem. The inner cover does not want to come off. After removing the outer cover I found just one bolt in the center of the inner cover. I was wondering if there might be a hidden bolt that I am not seeing. I realy don't want to pry too hard if there might be something holding it. Of course it may just be a stuck gasket. Just trying to be safe here.

Stuck gasket Mike. Little prying and it'll come off. Get it started and work your way around.

Thanks OBJ it took some serious prying to break that one loose, I just wanted to be sure. I have broken things before because of a hidden screw or bolt.

Now just one more question. I still can't see any obvious evidence of how water is getting into my bottom left cylinder so I am going to clean things up and put them back together and hope either the head gasket or exhaust cover gasket was leaking. After 15 years of salt water use the cooling system passageways are not the cleanest looking things. What is the best way to clean them out? I thought I would take a small wire brush to them but don't know how deep I will be able to get with one.

Re: 89 Johnson 110 exhaust cover

My local dealer didn't have the exhaust cover gaskets in stock so I ordered them. They just came in and when I went to install the exhaust cover I spoted the reason I was getting water in the cylinder. The problem I have now is the broken part is not in any of the expanded views of my engine the dealer has. Going from the exhaust port of the cylinders to the exhaust cover there is a part. I don't know what to call it, I guess it might be some sort of a baffle to direct exhaust to the exhaust cover. Anyway this part is shattered and I couldn't explain what it is to my parts man. If anybody has any idea what this part is called or a parts manual that shows it I would apreciat help.

They are in the parts book but he doesnt know where to find them. In this case thats good.

Those are exhaust deflector blocks and very expensive. To replace them correctly you need to remove the powerhead and install the new ones and machine them to fit.

You dont need them.

Unbolt them and throw them away. I doubt thats why water was getting in the #4 cylinder but you can run the motor without them anyway. The theory is that its part of the "tuned" exhaust. If they are melted or twisted then the motor most likely cannot develop enough rpm's and thats causing the extra combustion heat that distorts the blocks.

As for the water in the cylinder, look at the center rib real close. Most of those holes are water passages. Sometimes they crack and leak water in. Kinda hard to see sometimes.

Anyway get the blocks out and get the exhaust cavity cleaned up. We'll go from there.

Good luck!

I have the same exact problem with my 1996 115. What ultimately fixed your water problem in cylinder #4?

Nothing yet badlegs, My son has had a baseball game every night this week so as soon as I get off work it has been straight to the ballpark. I hope to put the outboard back toghther this weekend and I will let you know the results. I am hopeing it was a bad exhaust cover gasket. After 15 years of use there wasn't much left of the gasket, check back Saturday evening or Sunday and I'll let you know.
