Hello all,
This is my first time using this forum. I'm new to iboats and i am a new boat owner so I don't know much about them. I bought a "new to me boat" a few months ago with an 89 johnson 120 and it ran fine the first 7 or 8 times out. I bought the boat to use it so I take it out every weekend. Recently the idle has been rough and will sometimes stall out on me. It usually cranks right back up but unless I advance the throttle it will stall again after running for 30 to 40 seconds. In idle, before it stalls, it sounds like the engine is choking as it will make a short of hissing noise (like it's skipping). I took it to the dealer I bought it from and he informed me that the carbs should be rebuilt. I know my way around an engine so I rebuilt them (they were spotless though and had no gunk in them) with new gaskets and cleaned all the jets. After I rebulit them I took it out to test it and there is very little power now. I can move the shifter to WOT and the rpm's never advance past 1500. Out of the water the engine will rev and everything sounds fine but under a load it won't perform right. In addition if I let it idle it still sounds like it is choking and sometimes will backfire, even when I advance the throttle it will still backfire sometimes throughout the power band. I have replaced all spark plugs as well as the fuel filter neither of which seem to have helped any. The linkage to the carbs has been adjusted to factory specs, so i'm not sure what the problem could be. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would just like to get the boat back on the water. Also, I don't know if this makes a differance but I live on the coast so the boat is used in salt water. I flush the motor out after every use.
