89 Johnson GT 150-wont climb over 2200 RPM

HELP!!! MY model# J150STLCEM alarmed at wide open after about a 2 min run, the alarm was steady not intermittent. I idled back to dock with alarm sounding for five min. Visually checked the basics with motor off, found no smoking gun... When I started it back up the alarm was off, so I went for a ride. The motor will not climb over 2200 RPM, it feels and sounds like its being limited electronically. NO ALARM, runs great from 0-2200RPM when I hit 2200 the RPM gage jumps all over the place. Could it be stuck in SLOW mode? Why no alarm now? What triggers SlOW mode? My mechanic is booked for the next 5 days. I'm mechanically inclined, feed me info please. Tested in the driveway this morning same results...NO ALARM, limits out at 2200 in neutural and forward. Alarm does sound 1/2 second,as it should, with key turned to on. HELP!!!

I was told to purchase a new stator...Does this sound like the right thing to do? Kinda need the boat for the comming weekend.
