I just purchased an 89 Johnson GT 150 and I was wondering what I need to do to service the oil injection system. How can I test my alarms? I would like to keep the oil injection system, but I want to make sure it is functioning properly.

Reg3355..... To test the horn itself, simply turn the key to the ON position. The horn should have beeped momentarily the instant you turned the key.

Warning sounds are:

Beep every other second: VRO failure, air in oil line, oil restriction, no oil.

Beep constant and steady: Overheating... Also fuel restriction warning if a V/6 or V/8 engine.

Beep every 20 or 40 seconds: Oil level has dropped to 1/4 tank.

To test the horn wiring from the engine to the horn, have the key in the ON position. Find the TAN heat sensor wire that is protruding out of each cylinder head and ground that wire. The horn should beep steady and constantly.

Overheat Test: No one in their right mind would want to overheat their engine purposely. See the following paragraph.

Unless the heat sensors are melting out of the cylinder heads (quite unlikely), you could safely assume that the overheat warning system is operating properly (the wire's okay and the horn sounds).

Testing the VRO and the fuel restriction vacuum switch will require having the engine running.

Fuel Restriction Test: While running, using vice grips or some such tool of your choice, clamp the fuel line shut near the engine. Within a very short period of time, the warning horn should sound steady and constant, indicating a fuel restriction. Release the clamping tool.

VRO Test: While running, clamp the oil line near the engine. Again, within a very short period of time, the horn should sound with a beep every other second, indicating a oil restriction. Release the clamping tool.

Oil Level Test: Either siphon oil out so that the oil level drops below 1/4 tank (key ON), or run the engine until the level drops below that level naturally. The horn should beep every 20 seconds (This may have been updated to approximately every 40 seconds).

Did I miss anything?

Re: 89 Johnson GT 150

Thanks OMC Guru. Is there any type of oil that is preferred for these engines? Are there any parts that I should check for wear?
