89 johnson j225txced wont start just backfires

The motor quit on the way in from fishing will not start but only backfire once then nothing. what gives?

Timing is way off. Usually caused by a sheared flywheel key, which is normally the result of of flywheel being put back w/o being torqued. Crankshaft taper must be clean and dry (no oil) and the flywheel nut must be torqued, or the key will continue to shear until the flywheel and/or the crankshaft are destroyed.

another thing to look for would be a flywheel magnet / magnets loose or broken.
