I have a 1989 Merc 45hp (classic 50)
Last week I took the boat out for the first time. It fired right up, ran great. We took it around the lake full speed a few times, then we stopped, let it drift, restarted, let it drift, restarted etc.. We did this for about a half hour with no problems.
Then we stopped at the beach to use the bathroom, and when we came back the boat would not fire.
It had no spark.
This boat did the exact same thing last year, but by the time we got it to the marine shop it would start fine. The only thing the mechabic did was tape some bare wires on the stator.
Last year I rebuilt the carbs, and fuel pum so I don't think it is a fuel problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Test the stator. The wire insulation on those engines isn't the best. Look for shorts where the wire makes the bend from under the flywheel to the ignition. If the stator tests ok you can solder on new length's of wire or take the short cut and just put heat shrink on them.
