In a previous post about the high temp alarm going off it was mentioned to check the thermostat and popit valve on my engine. Can anyone tell me if and where these are located on a 1989 Merc 60hp.

Also does anyone know how to check and troubleshoot a temperature sensor on this engine.

Thanks for you help again.

Should be at the rear on the right side of the cylinder head, should be four bolts attaching it to the cylinder head. with the housing off the thermostat should be on the left of the housing, pressure relief valve should be next to it on the right.
I THINK!!! I'm not familiar with that motor but I knew someone with a slightly older model and it should be the same. you should see the housing on the cylinder head anyway
check the valve for corrosion salt deposits etc, make sure its clean, fill a sauce pan with water put the thermostat in with a thermometer begin to heat and make sure it opens at the right temp. don't know what that is for your motor someone may be able to help you there

I don't know where either, but they are under a cover attached to the water jacket on the rear of the engine. Just look at it from the rear (the plate where the plugs are screwed in). Somewhere on it will be a bulge (cover) with several screws holding it on. Remove it and ala.....popoff and stat. Pay close attention to the rubbergasets, springs, orientation of the contents and all so that you get the new stuff back in properly.

The opening temp is stamped on the pellet somewhere. A '95 150 opens at 143. An '02 90 opens at 120 to give you a couple of ideas. You can stick a candy thermometer in that pan of water to monitor the temp and don't have the fire too high so as to give it time to open.
