Great forum and much info here so far!
I have a 1994 Four Winns with an omc 3.0 liter gs engine and sx outdrive. The motor is seized, cracked under manifold, and has water in oil. Not a big deal, as I have fixed up my first boat by purchasing a brand new engine from MMotors.
Well, I did not want to break my families funds, so,I purchased a 1989 Dixie with a good 3.0 liter Mercruiser.
1. I have already dealt with the different crankshaft by carefully drilling out the omc coupler for the larger bolt pattern of the older type flywheel. Engine is in boat, good so far.
2. Unfortunately, the exhaust manifold had to also get swapped from the merc. Low and behold, I have a large port head, and the omc manifold has very small ports. But upon reading about, I think I can simply bolt the omc small port manifold to the larger port head.
3. I am keeping the merc valve cover.
4. Thermostat housing had to be changed, so did the waterpump pulley.
5. The merc had the DDIS, but I will swap to the HEI from the omc, as I am using the omc wiring harness.
6. Fuel pump is different, so it needs swapping. I did reuse the omc spacer plate. I hope the camshaft did not change, and the fuel pump lobe is the same.......HELP PLEASE!
7. I hope this 1989 head with the shorter spark plugs will be able to handle the new carburetor, and not run rich......
8. Waiting for seals, gimbal bearing, etc. hope to,get it ready for alignment and timing this weekend.
Please post any concerns or hints on this. I do have the 1994 omc head, and it appears ok. The #4 cylinder appeared to be seized, so the heads rear valves have some surface rust. I did not want to tear into the running engine any more than I had to, so I want to take the chance of running the small port manifold on them89 head.
Thanks!
