Hi, I just purchased a 1989 Chaparral 187xl with a 3.0L Mercruiser (engine #:M10219RA) as a fix me upper.

I installed a new coil, ignition wires, points, condenser and distributor cap and I still can't get it to fire consistantly. i also cleaned the engine block ground and the one at the baterry.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Did you set point dwell? Might also want to check the distributor shaft bushings for wear. No side to side movement of the shaft at all. Check all directions, it will only move in one spot.

Go to the top of the forum and click on the adults only (stickie) there are numerous sections for trouble shooting various items such as yours. For the fixer upers the issues can go on and on without the information you gather from proper trouble shooting techniques. Good luck and post back!

Thanks Don. What is the proper procedure for setting the dwell?
